Dr. Woei-Lien Chong - Sinoloog en filosoof
 
 
Woei-Lien Chong (Amsterdam, 1957) studied Sinology at the universities of Leiden, Beijing, Nanjing and Taipei, graduating from Leiden University in 1982. She also graduated in Philosophy from Leiden University, in 2005. In 1999, she obtained a PhD degree with a thesis on the reception of the Kantian philosophy in contemporary China. 
 
She was a Lecturer in Modern Chinese Philosophy at the Sinological Institute of Leiden University from 1985 to 2010, and a Visiting Fellow at the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) from 2010 to 2012. 
 
She has published on several topics in the field of contemporary China studies, notably Chinese thought, and new cinema (see Publications).
 
For 17 consecutive years, she was the Executive Editor of the journal China Information: A Quarterly on Contemporary China Studies (Sage Publishers, Londen), which she founded in 1986.
 
CI has since become one of the leading journals in the contemporary China field. In 2003, at her recommendation, she was succeeded by Tak-Wing Ngo, who, since 2010, has been heading the journal from his post as Professor of Political Science at the Department of Government and Public Administration at the University of Macau.
 
She taught Eastern and Chinese Philosophy at the Instituut voor Filosofie (Philosophy Institute) in Amsterdam (2012-2015), and is presently attached to the International School of Philosophy (ISVW) in Leusden as a Senior Lecturer in Chinese Philosophy. The focus of her present teaching and research is on Daoist philosophy, intercultural dialog and comparative philosophy.
